Head Massages involve strokes used for a complete effect. The different strokes are all varying and are used for their specific qualities and effects. However the overall effect is also dependant on the speed and depth with which the strokes are applied

You will find the following types of massages to be some of the most effective massages for relaxing.

Stroking
This is one of the basic massaging strokes or techniques. It uses the hands, fingers or forearms over the head. It has a soothing effect and is a great way to calm the mind. It is often used at the start of a more intense massaging session and is also used as an after-massage.

Kneading & Squeezing
These is one of the most popular massaging strokes or techniques. It is also referred to as circling, rolling and pinching. It involves picking away the scalp from the head and manipulating it variously using hands or fingers and thumbs

Holding
This involves stillness by just keeping hands on the head with a semi-relaxed presence. It is usually used as a means to mark the start and end of a session. At the beginning it is used to establish contact and the flow of energy. At the end of the session it is used as a means to signal the completion of the circle of energy.

Pulling & Lifting
This head massage involves pulling, lifting, stretching and tugging with the fingers and thumbs. It works on the principle of tension and release. This creates relaxation or mobility. These strokes are delivered in a lateral direction away from the body. This helps to direct and draw away the unwanted energies released by the massage..

Friction Strokes
This involves applying fingers and heels or sides of the hand. It involves a rubbing or a chopping motion. These are vigorous and warming thus stimulating blood circulation. This in turn brings more heat and energy to the area where the massage is applied. This is a great way to loosen muscles and connective tissue.

Percussion Strokes
These are also know as hacking or tapotement as it involves a sort of tapping action. It is applied with the sides or the tips of the fingers in a motion similar to playing a drum. One hand goes up while the second hand goes down. This stroke is effective on the nervous system and the circulatory system. It is light, refreshing and has a stimulating effect.
